Reading Article: “One small step for man, but women still have to leap”
On March 28, 2019, BBC released an article, “One small step for man, but women still have to leap”, written by Chris Bell (https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-47717937) It tells us about the cancellation of the first all-female spacewalk by NASA. It happened because there were not enough suits for the women in the right size. So, one female was replaced by a male. In this case, we have a sexism problem in the workplace. The female position in the workplace is lower than the male.
This article stated that the working industry, still can’t provide a safe environment for the female. Also, there is still no equality between female and male. In this article which is discussing NASA, it said, “For many women working in science, a choice between using equipment designed for men or missing out altogether is all too familiar.” We could tell that NASA only made the suit for the men. Thus, it is not safe enough for women to wear a suit that was designed for men.
The audience of this article is for all people, and the work industries that having the sexism, but more specifically, NASA. The main purpose of the article is to inform the people in general that there is no all-female spacewalk because one of the women was replaced by a man. This article also criticises the industries that having the sexism, by one of the interviewees who stated, “How can women represent a full range of career choices to the next generation of young girls, when we’re held back by something as simple as equipment and clothing that fits?”
The writer silently emphasizes that the equality between female and male in the working industry has to be fixed. “We don’t collect data on women and therefore we don’t design things for women”, clearly stated that women have lower class than men in the workplace. He also put many criticises from many women, to tells those industries indirectly. So, in the future, there will be a change in women careers.
In the end, this article was not only to inform the change of the spacewalk project but also to criticises sexism. I do agree with the implicit meaning behind this article, because women and men are the same. They are both human. Humans have to be treated equally. We shall not see the class of the humans by their skintone, their beauty, and their gender.
